Andrew Hahn is a journalist and geographer in Wisconsin. He crocheted this bathymetric map of Lake Mendota, which is close to Madison. Each stich represents 300 meters of horizontal space and each separate layer illustrates 10 meters of depth. The lake itself is just over 25 meters deep.
Hahn attributes his interest in this synthesis of the fabric arts and geography to Prof. Robert E. Roth of the University of Wisconsin at Madison. A few years ago, Roth led a quilting project to illustrate the geography of Madison using fabric quilting to express different cartographic perspectives and materials, including nails, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Halloween costume, and pasta.
