AI Takes a Look at a Controversial Madonna

Take a good look at this painting called the Madonna of the Rose (Madonna della rosa). It belongs to the the Museo del Prado in Madrid, and depicts Mary and Joseph with the infant Jesus and His slightly older cousin John the Baptist. The artwork is unsigned, but the Prado has attributed it to the Renaissance artist Raphael for centuries. Some art historians disagree, saying that the section at bottom with the rose isn't consistent with Raphael's style, and neither is the face of Joseph, which looks so different from the other three figures.

Now artificial intelligence has entered the conversation. An algorithm developed by professor Hassan Ugail of the University of Bradford in the UK analyzed the painting and says that the madonna and two children were painted by Raphael, as well as the majority of the rest of the painting, including the rose. But the algorithm has doubts about the face of Joseph, and believes it was painted by someone else. It's good to know that artificial intelligence is at least as smart as the average observer who is not an art expert. Read more about the study at Creative Bloq. -via Damn Interesting
