Embroidered Surveillance by Francine LeClercq

Surveillance cameras catch clandestine movements in the dark in grainy, lo-res images. While these images can be hard to interpret, there is never a doubt what kind of camera took them. Using them as a springboard for art is a surprise move.

French artist Francine LeClercq uses a variety of media to express her creativity, and for this project, she chose cross stitch, a form of embroidery that uses a cross for each pixel on the scene represented. She transformed images from surveillance cameras into cross stitch works of art as a statement evoking themes of privacy, observation, and societal norms. When we are not quite sure what -or who- we are looking at, every pixel counts. LeClercq's project is titled Embroidered Surveillance.
