Here’s Why Threads’ Confusing Logo Is Brilliant

A stroke of genius in terms of design, so to speak.

Twitter’s platform is going downhill. The top brass has been making decisions concerning the application that makes it unbearable for the majority of its user base. Seeing the opportunity before them, others have made their own platforms to be “the next Twitter.” One of them is Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram.

Threads is what Meta calls “the rival to Twitter.” One of Instagram’s latest features, it looks and feels like Twitter. There is no denying that. Functionality and user experience quality aside, people have been talking about the peculiar logo the company used for this new platform. It is clear, yes, a white “@” symbol set against a black background. Others have their own confused interpretations, of course. These include spaghetti stuck to the wall, a tangled thread, an ear, and more.  “I like that they used a tapeworm as the threads logo,” one said.

The interesting part of this logo is that it subverts people’s expectations of what a social media app logo should look like. It’s not simple and discernible, unlike Instagram’s camera, Twitter’s bird, and TikTok’s musical note. Threads’ logo captures the interest of people and uses their confusion to make them interpret things differently, which can increase visibility for their platform.
