Historic New York City Travel Posters

The lure of New York City has been expressed over and over in travel posters from airlines, shipping lines, railway lines, the federal government, and the city itself over the past 120 years. These travel posters focused on the exciting landmarks of the city: the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, Central Park, Times Square, the World Trade Center, and more than anything else, the Statue of Liberty. A collection of these posters have gone on display at the Chelsea museum in an exhibition called “Wonder City of the World: New York City Travel Posters.” The exhibit is open until September 8. Many of the posters are from well-known artists, even when they are advertising a travel service. You can see the evolution of styles over the 120 years since the turn of the 20th century. One thing that does not change is the charm of the United States' biggest city.

If you can't make it to New York to see the exhibition, you can read about it and see a selection of a dozen of the posters at ArtNet.
