When an art gallery or museum undergoes repairs or renovations, the most valuable artworks are stowed away safely. They could close their doors to visitors, or have some fun with it. The the Princeton University Art Museum chose the latter, and is staging a special exhibit now through November 5th called "Art about Art: Contemporary Photographers Look at Old Master Paintings" at the Art on Hulfish gallery. The rest of the museum is closed.
"Art on Art" is a collection from 13 photographers who were inspired by famous Old Masters, but put their own contemporary spin on those artworks. The example above is Double Mona Lisa (Peanut Butter and Jelly) by Vik Muniz, inspired both by Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and the block print style of Andy Warhol. The other works are just as lighthearted and thought-provoking, as they pull the original masterpieces into the modern world. Read about the exhibit and see more examples at Smithsonian.
