The Little Merman Joins the Little Mermaid in Denmark

A statue of The Little Mermaid has looked out over the sea in Copenhagen since 1913. Now she has a counterpart in the Danish town of Elsinore. The statue titled Han is the male version of the mermaid, made of stainless steel. The artwork was commissioned by the Elsinore City and the Arts Council of Denmark, and brought to life by artists Elmgreen & Dragset

Han sits in the exact same pose as The Little Mermaid, the difference being gender and the material. Han also holds a secret inside: a hydraulic system that closes his eyes for one second every thirty minutes. Whether this is charming or creepy is up to the beholder. The statue is controversial in Denmark for other reasons. Read about and see more of Han at Kuriositas.
