The Marvelously Morbid Assemblies of Laurent Gauthier

Laurent Gauthier is, if I am translating the French correctly, an “assembly artist”. On his Facebook page, you can see his bizarre compositions consisting of a variety of pre-existing objects combined in surreal and enchantingly disturbing ways.

The most famous of Gauthier’s works appears to be this insect collection display that reveals human-insect hybrids seemingly created by a mad scientist using human dolls and beetle parts.

This assembly of Juvenis Splendida (Splendid Child in Latin) is reminiscent of Michelangelo’s Vitruvian Man illustration.

Not everyone would appreciate the refined humor present in these altered dolls. For such uncultured people, Gauthier offers more sedate but still arresting sculptures, such as this salt and pepper set.
