Unconventional Canvases from Ruby Silvious

Ruby Silvious, an artist from the Philippines, juxtaposes immediately recognizable images and media that you'd never consider using. She calls this approach "non-traditional canvas". That's a good way of describing the use of a vintage hotel matchbook to show characters from the Men in Black film franchise.

Silvious became famous on the internet in 2015 when she launched her project to create daily paintings on--of all things--teabags. She has developed her teabag art into many creative forms, such as this scroll compiled of many of her teabag paintings.

What you may see as a throwaway object, Silvious sees as a canvas for her brushes. She often features natural products, such as leaves and acorns. In this example, she paints what appear to be sardines on Redbud Tree seed pods.

The inside of eggshells is a difficult place to create art, but Silvious is up for the challenge of composing delicate nudes on them.
