Satellite imagery revolutionized the way we view earth. From a distance, you can see beauty in its patterns that we'd never otherwise know. Danielle Currie translates those satellite images into embroidered works of art, bringing the flow and shimmer of wind, waves, and erosion to life. Each piece is titled with the latitude and longitude coordinates of the satellite picture. The image above was modeled after this 2020 photo taken by the satellite Landsat 8. It shows where the Bering Sea meets the Seward Peninsula.
Most of Currie's satellite embroidery is focused on water, from oceans to small rivers, with islands, reeds, and shorelines for contrast. See Currie's collections at her website. Some of them are available to purchase.
