Furby toys are, I think, popular because they hit the sweet spot in the uncanny valley between the adorably cute and the monstrously ugly. They’re basically monstrously cute, which is hard to achieve and thus reflexively appealing to the human psyche. This is why artist sometimes intentionally make Furbies that are frightening.
Enrique Puente, a fashion designer from Spain, has contributed to the trend. He has a specialty in handbags, so he made the “Furby Chaos Bag”. This purse pulsates with beating Furby hearts in a way that is both soothing and terrifying. It speaks to us, summoning us into the darkness.
